The current ABC Homepage looks outdated, is difficult to use on mobile devices, and has low audience engagement. Many users also mistake it for the ABC News homepage. The redesign should promote the breadth and depth of ABC content, including key events and stories. It should also make it easier for users to explore its diverse content across devices and access helpful features like search.
As a designer of the Core Web team, I participated and collaborated closely with UI / UX designers, developers, business analysts, and content experts from across the organisation to initiate a process that ultimately evolved into the ABC Homepage as it stands today.
Working with a talented team and upon revisiting existing research and data insights, areas for improvement were identified which were further explored through interviews with subject matter experts and with our audience.
The process we embarked on included interviews with internal and external audiences, gathering Data and Insights, ideation workshops with designers, developers, SME's from various parts of the organization and ongoing interations.
Some key points to address included:
After talking with experts, we used the "How Might We" framework to explore key homepage features for both our audience and the ABC organization.
Working across teams, we developed and tested several homepage concepts with our audience. This testing finalized the homepage's direction. Our design system library sped up concept creation and improved teamwork.
The redesigned ABC Homepage reflects extensive collaboration across many departments and the contributions of talented individuals. Built with accessibility in mind, the new site offers more relevant content, improves discovery of ABC products, promotes key ABC events, and engages a wider audience — all while strengthening the ABC brand.
Content collections include Editor's Choice, Daily Discoveries, and content related to the location selector and weather information.
Content cards and other components are part of the ABC design system and are used across all ABC websites.
The responsive design approach ensures the ABC Website works across all viewports.
